Funny & quirky

My son, age 3 and daughter, age 6 both LOVE this book. The great news...so do I! It cracks us all up. Because of its simplicity, the kids feel they can "almost" read it on their own. That makes them feel special, and encourages their love of books and reading. The illustrations are so adorable, and retro...and I would definitely say that with this book, "less is more". If you don't buy it, check it out at the library. Then, I'm sure you'll soon buy it! My kids actually "get" the dog's sarcasm in this book. Love it. Love Calvin. Love Gloria.

Finally- a realistic children's book..

Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration but this is one of the few that doesn't necessarily have a happy ending. It's a real world story that things don't always go your way & that sometimes you have things happen that must require compromise. That is if you want to find "meaning" in things, which I don't think is always required. Sometimes didactic requirements many place on kids' books are a bit annoying. The illustrations (including text) are spot on. Kuddos to both author & illustrator. Won't give away the story (as it has kind of a twist ending) but will say we read this book almost every day to our 2 year old & he thinks it hilarious. We think it's pretty funny too.

I don't like Gloria

The graphics of this book were wonderful and the story is timeless! Jealous of the new cat, Calvin moans throughout the entire story the line, "I don't like Gloria". He also feels unwanted and unloved. It can be used in all type of human situations (i.e. new baby, siblings getting friends, divorced parents dating other people, older siblings having new experiences). The artwork is fresh yet reminds the reader of a different era. It is a wonderful read and has many uses in the home, school and library! Highly recommend this story!

Margaret Chamberlain's drawings are simple but fun.

Kaye Umansky's I DON'T LIKE GLORIA! tells of Calvin, a dog who has to live with the cat Gloria. Nobody asked him permission to have her move in and he hates her for many reasons - until another strange circumstance unites them. Margaret Chamberlain's drawings are simple but fun.
