My sister and I loved this book growing up! It is a huge part of our childhood memories, so my review may be a bit biased. I actually still own my original copy and am buying another for my sister who swears the book belonged to her. (Fortunately for me my grandmother wrote an inscription when she gave it to me Christmas of 1977.) Now that my own son is turning five I will begin reading the stories to him. The format allows children to choose the story they would like to hear by providing a unique table of contents which is entirely made up of pictures. As the child gets to know the stories he will immediately recognize the picture that goes with it and be able to turn to the page number provided. Each story is written as a two page spread with a small handful of extra illustrations. I would not recommend this book for very small children as it does not have enough pictures to hold their attentions. Also, although no story is more than two pages, they may be a bit long for the very young.
Classic Bedtime Stories In A Unique Format

My parents read this book to me when I was small and now I read it to mine so the stories can be a bit dated by today's standards. However, the format of the book is unique because the child can select the story to be read from a page of illustrations (or icons) that represent all of the different tales in the book (over 50 in all). A perfect tool to get a child past individual picture books before they are ready to read themselves. This simple interactive format works as the larger goal is to recognize every story from the "illustrated table of contents" in the front of the book. It is great if you want to take a bedtime story routine to a higher level. Probably best for 3 and up.
