Lush, musical, purple

This is one of C.A. Smith's best volumes (Averoigne would be the other I'd most recommend), which I expect most will consider good or bad depending on whether this sort of thing is to their taste. Smith's talent to paint a scene in words, inject musicality into prose, and permit wonder/dread to grow slowly in the reader is higher than many of his contemporaries. It's less subtle than Lovecraft and more beautiful than Howard - I'd place this book between Tanith Lee's Night's Master and Neil Gaimen's Sandman.
