Destiny Thieves

"Million Tears" begins when a high school boy named Hiromu starts noticing that his friends are disappearing. Everyone except Hiromu forgets that these people even existed. Then, a mysterious new boy arrives at school, and reveals to Hiromu his connection to the mysterious, not quite human destiny thieves. This manga had a pretty fresh concept. The death thieves are like vampires, only they eat people's souls and existences. It's most interesting when it delves into the past. This part of the story is set in the Taisho era of Japan, when Western influences mixed with Japanese culture. The pacing was almost right. I was glad the manga-ka didn't spend a lot of time having the hero agonizing over his situation. I felt like it went a little fast, but this might be due to the fact that most manga take forever to get to the point, and I'm used to that. The length was good. I didn't get tired of reading it, but I still felt like I was getting enough manga for my money. The characters are so so. They don't really have much development or emotional complexity. In other words, they're kind of flat. This is where the manga loses the most points. The art is beautiful, although sometimes the manga-ka seems to have a little trouble with proportions (especially with hands). But her layouts are very well done. Overall, "Million Tears" is a good manga that could use a bit of polishing. It had its problems, but it was still interesting and pretty enough to keep me reading. Plus,it's only two volumes long, so you won't break the bank completing the series. I look forward to reading volume two.
