Interesting ethnography about poorest of the poor black people in the inner city, from the 1970's. Still relevant.

Great introduction to ethnography and community research

WHile this book is almost 20 years old, it offers a refreshing look at community study. Today there are many ethnographic works which explore first hand various community settings. This book however presents a view that forces one to rethink many of the negative images presented of poor underdeveloped neighborhoods. This was one of the first books I read on ethnography and I am hooked!
