Book Overview

The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse has the whole village investigating the murder. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters--inners whom most people would write off as irredeemable--forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village.

So Much Potential

I feel that this is a case of the author losing sight of the point and taking the reader on a rollercoaster of irrelevant backstories, distractions, and shock value that does not contribute to the greater story. I thought that surely I was being fed all of these details for a reason and that they would come back and tie into the story in some way, but they don't. The story held so much potential and I truly wanted to enjoy this book, but ultimately I felt very underwhelmed.
