Hunting in North America

This is a clear, concise introduction to hunting in North America. The first 75 pages, comprising chapters 1 through 3, briefly survey general topics such as the types of cover that game animals use for security, the hunting rifle, shotgun, bow, and muzzle loader, and hunting strategies such as scouting, still-hunting, stand-hunting, stalking, driving, flushing, using hunting dogs, float-hunting, and how to find downed game. The final 110 pages, chapter 4, discuss hunting big game ( whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, moose, pronghorns, black bear ), small game ( cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, gray squirrel, fox squirrel, raccoon ), upland game birds ( ring-necked pheasant, bobwhite quail, California quail, gambel's quail, mountain quail, scaled quail, ruffed grouse, sage grouse, chukar partridge, Hungarian partridge, wild turkey, morning dove, woodcock ), and waterfowl ( puddle ducks, diving ducks, geese ). For each animal there is a photo of the animal and an illustration of North America indicating the range of the animal's habitat. There are also recommendations for minimum caliber and bullet weight or shotshell gauge and shot size to take each animal. There is no information on how to field dress, skin, butcher, or cook the animal. There are no photos or illustrations of tracks or scat, except a single comparative illustration showing the relative sizes of pronghorn, deer, elk, and moose hoof prints. This book contains no hunting stories, anecdotes, or personal reminiscences. The book is written as a reference, and in fact no author is credited with the text.
