Hubener vs. Hitler

I haven't read the biography, but have seen the hour long dvd of Helmuth's account by the LDS Church. He was a very brave young man. An example to every young student of history and those who look for the foundation of courage and the will of iron. I have read the biographers' writings about other people and recommend this book to anyone for their personal library.

Enlightening biography of German youth who tried to defy Hitler

This easy to read but relatively thick book is a biography of a young German teenager, Helmuth Hubener. He was one of the few young Germans who actually stood up against the Nazi regime of his nation and actually took actions which by the laws of the land, treasonable and traitorous. For his efforts, he was captured, tortured and finally beheaded by the German authorities. His "resistence cell" all survived outside of him and this book was written with their testimonies and accounts. This book also take in account the activities and accounts of the LDS church in Nazi Germany as well since Helmuth Hubener was an active Mormon. Its reflects that the Mormons in Germany basically rolled with the punches and tried not to stand out. Due to Gestapo's pressure, Hubener was even ex-communicate from LDS although he was reinstalled after the war and even made an elder. I thought the book was pretty well written with appendixes matching a pretty good level of research. Helmuth Hubener's journey from a Hitler Youth enthusiast to anti-Hitler leaflet writing resistence fighter proves to be an interesting reading for anyone interested in history of Nazi Germany and her people as well as anyone interested in the history of LDS in foreign nations. The book come highly recommended on an unknown German youth who at least had the courage to act on his conviction. While some may say that his acts were foolhardy and too minor, if all good Germans acted as he did, excess of their nation in World War II might have been abated.
