Good book!!!

I plan to do this with my baby girl when she’s 8 months. However I’m very curious to see if it actually works.

Teach Your Baby Life

Doman's books are a must read. I already suggested that one should start with How to Teach Your Baby to Read, because it has the philosophical underpinnings of their theory, but that book is a little time consuming to implement because you have to write words in a cardboard (see cover). How to Teach Math should be the second, but it is much easier to implement the program because you can purchase an inexpensive kit from the author's institute (see cover). I also recommend you to take the author's courses, in Philadelphia, but they are a couple of thousand dollars or more. Do it all before your baby is born. I read How to Multiply your Baby's Intelligence 10 years before my wife got pregnant and it changed my life... and my daughter's (I hope). It changed how I saw child's development. Now she is 3. But don't get too carried away. Believe me, some parents do get carried away. The ones in Philadelphia seem to belong to a sect. Just enjoy your children and add this program to the fun. Although I spend a large amount of money with the course, I really don't do much of the program. Still, I raise my daughter differently from what I would otherwise have done without having read this book or taken the course. You will not be the same person after you read it. And it is not about teaching your baby to read. It is about learning how to teach your baby about life. You will have more respect for your child and will not let your baby grow "by accident." Instead, you will be able to actively participate in the learning process and challenge your child to fulfill his or her intellectual potential. If you have a child, or if you don't but you love someone, this is the only book that you must read. Remember, read it before the baby is born. This collection is a wonderful present for an expecting mother.

Baby Math

Another great title by Glenn Doman that helps parents to focus on their children. Helps parents think of their children in new ways and changes what is possible because it changes our assumptions about our children. Reading and using the techniques in the Doman books gives children a head start on learning to love learning.

A very interesting notion

Disclaimer: I actually have no children at this time on which to try this method, so unfortunately I have only to pester my friends to read the book to try it out and cannot speak to the results. That aside, the book was, in itself, tremendously interesting to me. The idea of the "Gentle Revolution" is that children are able to take in and process tremendous amounts of information beginning at birth. This period of intense and specialized learning is to come to a close around the age of five, coincidentally the same time at which most children begin to be formally trained. The author developed his theory, originally, through his work with children who had sustained all different types of brain injury. His discoveries about their learning processes, led to discoveries about the learning process for all children. The reason that I had to give this book four stars, although I did find it so fascinating, is that, if you have read How to Teach Your Baby to Read, you will find that at least half of this book is a reprint of that, with reading taken out and mathematics put in its place. The book does pick up again when they get away from convincing you that you should try this and why, and get to the actual method. The author believes that babies can learn math instantly and quantitatively. He believes that a baby can look at an 11"x11" white card with a lot of 3/4" red dots on it, and immediately know that there are 79 dots. It all seems very "Rainman". He suggests that numbers, or numerals, only serve to confuse the situation, and that babies can be taught math using pure quanities, without the numbers getting in the way. The steps involved include recognizing quanities instantly, addition, subraction, multiplication and division, simple algebra, sequences, etc..The method seems simple enough, if one is willing to put forth the effort to make up the flash cards and spend the few minutes each day it takes to go through them with the baby. The book also decribes the different ways one might approach this program given different age groups, such as newborn to three months, eighteen to thirty months, up to five and six year olds, and encourages that whatever you do and whatever effort at whatever stage you do it, can only benefit your child.I would recommend this book if you are interested in raising an exceptional child, or even if you just have a general interest in the brain and the learning process.

A Great Discovery

I do not think I exagerate when I rate this discovery as one of the greatest of the last century. Infants, up to age 2-1/2 years, have the amazing ability to instantly recognize quantities (or dots). An infant can recognize the difference between 78 and 79 dots (or whatever) and point it out to you. Not only that, this amazing ability can be used to teach math. The dot quantities can be shown to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These children grow up with this ability to instantly do math and the instant quantities. The ability to instantly see how many cows are in a field or birds are flying together in a flock once existed in all of us; we just never had this ability exercised when we were very young. It only takes a few seconds to do an exercise so you only spend about a minute a day showing your infant or toddler. This truly is amazing and a great lifetime gift for your child.

Invest in your Childreen, improve their life

When it comes to improving our children's life there are not enough stars in heaven to rate this book and the contribution Glenn Doman has made to mankind. On the surface the whole program looks like nothing but memorization. However if you understand the philosophy you understand that it is all about Quality repetitive stimulation, not memorization. The philosophy is simple and we have heard it a million times, The brain is like a muscle the more you exercise (stimulate) it the more it develops. There is one important difference however, the development of the brain is some what inversely proportional to ones age. The youngest mind (Infant mind) responds (develops) the best to stimulation. There is one other major point we need to understand. There is a difference between learning and developing the brain. Developing the brain is the establishment of the neuron connection in the brain in to the different areas of the brain, this is how your increase your IQ. Learning is the activity of studying a subject, and internalizing it, this is how you increase your wisdom/knowledge. We all understand to become a professional athlete, we need to develop the capability of the muscles to perform the work and we need to learn the skill to perform the work. We also understand there is no way to separate the two different development areas. That is as a beginner to any sport you have to and do develop both the skill and the ability at the same time as you participate. The whole point Glenn and Janet Doman are making is one that any good coach understands, the most effective way to increase the rate of development and potential of ability is to engage in quality repetitive stimulation. My degree is in Education, and I am a student of life and how we, and why we learn, Glenn and Janet have written several books that clearly explain why and how to increase your child's potential. The philosophy is sound and the methods are well proven. There is but one thing to consider, are you willing to develop children that are smarter then your self and give them a real chance to excel. If so read the books, understand the philosophy and consistently employee the methods. Your children will be greatly rewarded!!
