Some great ideas

This book is encouraging! The ideas are submitted as bite size pieces with clear examples to achieve my goal. I've been putting the ideas, especially the 'no naked...' rules, into practice! Thank you for the help!

a solid start in being a better communicator.

I bought this book over two years ago and before I got to assorting and throwing away half my self-help books, I figured what the hell, let's give this another read. As I write this review, I'm definitely glad I did. I'm not a business major or someone that's looking to spruce up on their formal/dinner party communications. However, the first third of the book deals with basic and general communication that can be used anytime, anywhere. Most of it's common sense, but it's common sense that I never bothered applying to even se ethe difference that it makes. Techniques such as "sticky eyes" (maintaining consistent eye contact for 5-10 seconds at a time), "epoxy eyes", "word detective", and "parroting" were extremely useful to me. I've been putting all of these into effect the past few days and the eye contact is definitely helping me, at the very least, to show that I care about what a particular person is saying to me instead of looking away every 2 seconds like I used to. My only gripe is that a majority of the book is for the business world and how to become an "insider" at many business dinners, parties, social events. However, the portion that applied to me alone was worth a 5 star rating and the portion that I would give a 3 star (only because it doesn't apply to the average college sophomore at this moment) I'm sure I'll use later. Like any book, it takes time to formulate some of the techniques and make them a consistent daily habit. Is most of the advice common sense? As with most of my reviews of my self-help book stack lately, yes. However, it's the common sense that I've skipped over half of my life up until this point. Even so, there are new techniques and ideas that I had never thought of, but with the majority being most of those that the "idea" bulb went off about 10 years later on. What bothers me is I didn't start applying common sense advice such as Lowdnes sooner.

Excellent book, but duplicates "How to Talk to Anybody"

This is an excellent book with highly useable and very practical ideas expressed in a fun, readable style. Highly recommended UNLESS you have "How to talk to anybody" by the same author. They are the same.

Will turn the shy person in the corner, to life of the party

This book is great. This could turn any shy person into the center and life of a party. Leil Lowndes gives great tips, and her life experiences to go along with those tips. Such tips as matching your person's mood. Being a "word detective", or parroting. I noticed that my brother, who is a very charismatic person (I'm not that outgoing), using simple tips found in this book such as parroting (repeating what the other person said, such as "I like this book", "What do you find so intresting about it") This technique alone can keep a conversation going, but there are still 91 more technique's in this book. You'll never run out of things to say.I've read other small talk books, but this is the best one out there. It doesn't only teach you how to make first impressions, "pick-ups", or business chat, but also how to maintain conversations, and how to get that in-depth conversation. The techniques in this book are great because whenever you think, "Hmm, what did she mean by that", she always associates it with her life experiences and then it becomes clear. With this book, you will NEVER run out of conversation.

A Confidence Builder

Truly a book worth reading. Most books I have read on this topic focus on public speaking from a very broad perspective. This book gives you valuable tips in every scenerio from business to social. I read it prior to an interview and am convinced it was a large part of my success in landing a six figure job.
