I have been using the Cat 6 books for my kids for several years. These books do not make your kid smarter, necessarily, but they do teach them how to take a test. My oldest, who is in sixth grade, has been using these books since he was in first grade. Every year his scores have increased to the point where he is now well into the advanced range in all areas. Of course, he was already a good student prior to getting these books so scoring advanced is not such a big feat. What has been surprising, however, is the impact these books have had on my fourth grader. He has always struggled in school and usually gets B & C's. Last year on the standardized tests, to our surprise, he scored well into the advanced range in mathmatics and close to that in language arts. I thought I had a genius on my hands but his grades this year have not reflected this advancement(B- in math). The reason I believe he scored so high on the standardized testing was because of these books. He learned before the testing how to answer certain types of questions. The way this book is set up is in two halves. In the first half, the kids take timed tests. I do not prep them at all. They just take the test then we grade them together. We go through the wrong answers and talk about what they did wrong. They do the entire first half of the book this way and then they start the second half. The second half has the same type of questions as the first. Because the kids have already done those types of problems, they always score much better the second time around. When these same types of problems occur again on the actual test, the kids have a better shot at knowing them because they have already learned them...twice. It is simple enough to do (40 minutes a night for a couple of weeks to finish the entire book) but has had a definate impact on my kids' abilities to take tests. If you want to help improve your child's scores, give these books a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised.
