Classic Dulcimer Reference

Hines did a masterful job of blending his scholarly research on the history of the "dulcimore" with his hands-on personal experience. An excellent craftsman, Hines writes from the perspective of one who builds and plays this mavelous American folk instrument. His photos and illustrations inspire amateur and experienced builders/players alike. Unlike some luthiers who guard their alleged secrets, Hines shares and explains his techniques without saving anything for selfish purposes. As Wendell Berry once wrote of someone "his hands know as much as his head." The book's inclusion of plans and tablature attest to the author's ability to think beyond the self. I believe he would be delighted to learn that his work has contributed to the appreciation and propagation of one of America's earliest folk instruments. Anyone who plays, builds, or appreciates this instrument and its history should capture a copy of this book. I treasure mine for all the reasons mentioned, plus a few more I'll not bore you with. Superb work. As a bonus, the foreword was written by none other than Roy Acuff -- talk about a tough act to follow.

An Interesting Read

This book has a great mixture of old-time playin, dulcimer construction, and history. Chet Hines really createes a friendly tome in this book, sure to spark your curiosity and make you want to start building immediately. His selection of old time songs is likewise indispensable. This book is well worth a read.
