This little tome will take you no more time to read than to eat a Hot Dog at Nathan's. To love a New Yorker, first you gotta understand what a New Yorker is. It's not someone who lives there ,because a New Yorker doesn't live in New York. A New Yorker lives in the Bronx,Queens,Brooklyn,Harlem,Morningside Heights,Upper Westside,Upper Eastside,Midtown,Murray Hill,The Village,Soho,Little Italy,Chinatown,Brooklyn Heights,Staten Island,Long Island,or just anywhere in the area and must include anyone from anywhere else, once they spend some time in "New York" and adopt the state of mind which is impossible to avoid. I worked in Manhatten for 5 years while living in New Jersey. So,while my family and I were not New Yorkers when at home in the "Garden State" ,which by the way doesn't get it's name from beautiful gardens, but because it is known as the state where all the trucks from the vegetable garden farms come from. You gotta be a New Yorker to see the point, when you exit the tunnel from Manhatten into New Jersey, and you are greeted by a huge sign proclaming "WELCOME TO THE GARDEN STATE", and all you can see for miles around are oil refineries, warehouses, old fences and general blight. However, once you enter New York, and act and react like a New Yorker, you become one. Anyone just visiting ,and isn't able to make the transformation, simply gets left in a state of amazement and never does understand it all,nor can understand how all this came about or how it could ever possibly work. A good example can be seen every day on 8th Avenue, in the Garment District. Here you will see the streets jammed with every possible type of vehicle, person, huckster, and what not ,when at the same time racks of clothing go sailing through it all as if everything is normal.Guess what?,It is, and it is all very efficient. It's too bad there aren't any clothes racks in the picture on the cover, because they are essential to making it all work. I love the drawings in the book and it is as important to read the "looks" on the faces of all the people. It is imperative to be able to assume the correct expression automatically,at a monents notice, and even more important to hold it as long as the situation demands. The book does an excellent job of explaining what being a New Yorker entails and captures its essence. While there,my favourite Radio Station was WOR NY.Every night at 10pm Jean Shepherd took to the air. Though he came from the Midwest,he was transformed once he entered the city. He had his own way of expressing what New York was all about. "When you leave New York, you're outta town,no matter where you go!" As you go through the scenes in this little gem,you will be saying to yourself; "Only in New York!" Just try to imagine the scene on the cover taking place anywhere else but New York. And pay particular attention to the facial expressions, because they tell how New Yorkers deal with it all. My only regret was the book was too short. It only laste
