Book Overview

"His tongue-in-cheek technical explanations here will have you howling with laughter ..."-Daily Telegraph

Well written, if slightly baffleing.

James May, from those that know him from such shows as Top Gear, and The Re-assembler, will sincerely and earnestly instruct you in this book how to land an A330 Airbus, with lavish illustrations, and even with advice on how to seem more heroic in the post event news coverage. And while that is well and good, you may find yourself somewhat wanting throughout this book. It's bulk is a series of several how-to guides, of which all but one are very unlikely to ever happen to you, and one that offers very informative information for assisting with childbirth which I will fully admit, could actually come to help someone in an hour of great stress. The other guides feel... well one could say needlessly over-technical, and unlike similar quasi instructional media James has done in the past where the real purpose was to use the instruction as an excuse to dive into the history of the surroundings of whatever he is instructing on, or interesting stories of his that relate to his history with said thing, the bulk of this book is genuinely just how to do whatever silly thing he's telling you about, often in a way that is mildly comedic, tho the forced specifics somewhat spoil the jokes in my eyes. It is most assuredly still an enjoyable book, but you may find it a slog if you don't particularly care about the minutia of how to handle throttle control on a historic railway steam train, and other multi-page spanning technical tangents.
