Even If You Don't Read Romance

I'm not a romance reader (unless Jane Austen counts), but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's one of the best knitlit books I've read, in part because the author accurately portrays the knit tribe as the slightly loopy yarn obsessed people that we really are. You'd almost think that Rachel was eavesdropping on a few of my SnB's meetings.

Fun new knit-chick-lit!

I met author Rachael Herron at Stitches West-huge knitting/crocheting convention- the weekend before the book came out. Her enthusiasm and excitement over her book was contagious...like Abigail's over anything yarn/fiber related...and I had to find the book. Read it in a couple of days..things got in the way..knitting, cooking, family..and am now re-reading it and savoring each element of the story. The first time through I had to find out how each crisis would be resolved which resulted in late nights of rushed reading. Ms Herron not only captured a spot-on portrait of the knitting world with all of its quirkiness, she captured the character of a rural community being encroached upon by urban life. The fear and distrust of the ranchers, slow to accept newcomers and resentful of any threat to their way of life (and who can blame them?) is written with understanding and empathy. This is a story with many facets, all handled quite enjoyably well! It even has chase scenes!

She hits it out of the park, her first time out

Rachael Herron is a blogger I've been a fan of for a couple of years now. I downloaded the book yesterday to give it a shot as I knit and I love romance novels. This book is engaging. You want to know what happens to the characters, all of them, human and animal alike. Except for a short break for my astronomy class, I couldn't put the book down. I was late getting home because I refused to stop reading for the 20 minutes it would take me to make the drive. Excellent read. I cannot wait for book 2.

Perfectly charming!

First things first: Rachael Herron is a romance writer. (Go read this blog post [...]-- I'll wait for you to come back.) A smart, happy, proud romance writer. This is important to know because do romance novels have conventions? Yes, yes, they do. Do you know, more or less, how this is all going to sort itself out? You do. But boy is it a lot of fun getting to the end of the ride. This is not merely a knitting-themed romance. It's one that's incredibly accurate. Knitters really are a little loopy, and while the outside world might not understand the secret code, we do, and it's all here. There's a bit in a key scene between our main characters, Abigail and Cade, where Abigail zeros in on a difficult decrease stitch to avoid looking at him, and that's just perfect. Cade and Abigail are both likable characters, and the tension between them is nicely constructed. It's built into the plot, and it's built into their expectations of themselves and each other. The supporting cast is boisterous and funny (with a key exception), and they help to advance the story line without overwhelming it or seeming unnecessary. The dialogue is both abundant and very good. There is a pervasive spirit of good humor that runs through the story, even as the drama between the characters plays out. Abigail is successful, accomplished, and ambitious, but also playful, charming, and utterly endearing. Cade is manly and stubborn, but tender, too. On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable read--I loved spending time with these characters in their world. There is a bonus sweater pattern at the end...but the knitters will already know that!

Fantastic romance (with some great knitting tips!)

Rachael Herron's writing is familiar to me, since I've been following her blog for quite a while now. This book is more than just a longer blog entry though--it is a sweet, funny, and sometimes sad romance that I literally could not put down. I purchased the book at 1:32am (Kindle edition) and it is now 4:19am and I've just finished. The characters are real and human, and like any good romance, offer many points where the reader can almost imagine themselves in their shoes. I love Abigail and her naivete, and I love Cade and his stubborn brashness. Most of all, I love "EC"'s little tips at the beginning of every chapter. The knitting pattern at the end of the book is a great little bonus as well. In fact, the knitting aspect is not just thrown in as so many of the current chick-lit novels seem wont to do. There is a real understanding of the craft and the people who live and love it, without alienating people who don't knit (yet--they will want to learn after reading this book!).
