A solid, balanced, relationship-cultivating book

If you're ready for a real relationship, this is the book to help you do it. If you're ready to take responsibility for the rest of your life--in relationships and other matters--this is DEFINITELY the book for you. The author, Helena Rosenberg, presents a cohesive way of looking for a relationship by conducting a fearless moral/social/spiritual inventory of yourself and whether or not you're REALLY ready to pursue a healty relationship that can lead to marriage. At times some of the advice may seem obvious (you need to be "out" more in order to meet people), but when you get deeper into the book, the advice becomes more profound (ask yourself what you're going to do in service of improving your personal life; be prepared to invest time in improving and expanding your social life). While reading this book, I received many "Aha's!", not just for dating or meeting new men--this will be my first time dating, ever!--but for reviewing how I've been treating the rest of my life's goals. "Getting Married after 35" is a real eye-opener, if you're really ready to do something to improve your chances of finding that special someone and improve the rest of your life in the process. You won't be disappointed.

I get it

Generally speaking I don't read self-help books as my background is in psychotherapy and I am currently a social worker. But my real reason for this is that I find self-help books redundant. You get the answer in the first chapter and you don't need to read the rest of the book. Not so with Helena Rosenbergs book. I am in the last few chapters now and have enjoyed each moment as it is entertaining, insightful, and interesting. But unlike some reviewers, you have to be ready to read this book, and you have to "get it." Years ago, I would have said "yeah, yeah yeah, I know, I know." Now I am looking at it with a whole new set of eyes because I am 42 1/2 and had been thinking I knew it all for 22 single years. Before I read the book, I DID just recently begin to really get what was holding me back, BUT, now that it is artfully interpreted in this book, my feelings are validated. I can't take them back now because she said what I felt. I also believe that this book will be enjoyed by both a psychotherapist and a lay person. Of course I am only giving the opinion from one side. I have also recommended it to single friends and I will wait and here what they think. If you are really REALLY ready to get some insight into what is holding you back in life, then you should pick up this book and devour it. Listen. Don't make excuses, don't kid yourself. Not every single word will pertain to you, but it is interesting anyway because it might pertain to a friend. But when you listen to any lecture, not all of it will pertain to you, you take from it what is relevant to your life and use it. But if you are still of the mindset "I like my world the way it is" when you see this book, then walk away, because you don't need to read it anyway. But don't write a review on here because you want to tell us you know it all. It isn't fair to the author or her book -- Especially if you have never even read it cover to cover!
