One of the Best Music 'How To' Books for String Teachers
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This book is a pioneer among books for beginning string teachers. It gives descriptions of the instruments and their ranges as well as physical descriptions of hand shapes necessary for children to become successful string players. This book was the first of its kind on the market to include everything a first-year teacher should know. It has a wonderful list of music for both string orchestra and full orchestra; teachers should try to include as many of these pieces in their repertoire as possible, if they are still in print. I had the occasion to speak with the author at an American String Teachers' Association convention a few years ago and urged her to have the publisher, Kjos, reissue the book with an updated version (and music list). I told her that it still contained valuable material from which new teachers (and experienced ones as well)could benefit. Sadly, her co-author passed away in 1991. Nevertheless, the book, even in its 1978 edition, can be a valuable tool for a teacher who is just starting out in the business.
