It always bugs me to check out a book from the library, decide that I love it and go to write a review, just to find that the book is little-known, out of print, and has never been reviewed before. So many books languish in anonymity... I suppose it is my calling to give them a voice. Seriously, though, this book is great. My daughter read it all week long and she especially loves acting out the part of the Sun who won't share his light, saying "Never, never, never" in a dramatic voice. This is the story of a time before the moon and stars, when the Sun was the only light in the sky. At night the world was completely dark and the animals were frightened. They finally decide to ask the fierce Sun if they may have a small piece of his light to keep with them in the evenings. As each animal goes and tries a different tactic (threatening, pleading, beguiling) he is refused. Finally Rabbit tries and, although he has a hard journey, he finally arrives at the top of the highest mountain in the world. He is refused as before. But Rabbit knows that all the animals are depending on him and that he is the last who will make the attempt so he is determined to succeed. With one massive leap, he jumps up to the Sun and bites off a piece in his mouth. Running running for days and nights without stopping he is nearly home when he trips and falls and drops the piece of Sun from his mouth where it smashes into many pieces. What happens next? Read it and find out.
