A Pleasant Read!

Reading one of Erwin Lutzer's book is kind of like listening to a series of sermons on a topic over a period of several months, but it's not a bad thing. You can read a chapter a week, and still get something out of it.This book by Lutzer was written in 1985, and it still has some relevance to 2003. He is the Senior Pastor at Moody Church in Chicago, so he has some experience with preaching and putting together his thesis. There are 14 chapters in this book:1 - You in the World - focusing on the forms of entertainment, and our relationship with society.2 - The World: A puzzle with four pieces - this chapter focuses on our world, and Lutzer believes that nothing turns out right, and we're like Humpty Dumpty. "Worldliness" is defined, and he uses the word "world" as describing the planet, people, system and culture of our lives. He sees sensual pleasure as covetousness in advertising, and our relationship with God being choked as we are hooked on the world.3 - Contact without Contamination - Personal insulation is talked about here, and he takes to task the personal insulation some choose, and shows how The Good Samaritan responded to his world.4 - Those Shortcuts to Evangelism - Personal witnessing and the world and its methods.5 - Taking Your Spiritual Temperature - What Christian Hospitality is not and what it is. Plus personal involvement in people's lives.6 - Resolving Our Differences - the problems in early Corinth and Rome.7 - Those Don'ts and Dos - focuses on Legalism.8 - How Dollars Can Make Sense - Giving/Tithing/Finances9 - 20th Century Fig Leaves - Our lifestyles; suitable modesty; cultural acceptance; personal applications.10 - A Rough Sketch of the Fine Arts - Arts and Music11 - The Tensions of Doctrine - Doctrinal separations.12 - God's Compass Points Up - fellowship in Christ.13 - The Ax Put to the Root of the Tree - struggles with the Will, and struggles for power and fulfillment.14 - So What If I'm Worldly?Interesting reading, to be sure, and at the end of each chapter, he has discussion questions which probe a little deeper. This book cannot obviously address all the deeper problems, but it's a good beginning, even by today's standards. It's recommended for those who'd like to grab on to some meaning in their lives, or who are even questioning some of these areas.
