Excerpt from HORSE TALES by Ben K. Green

One Friday morning I was in the best cafe in a country town where all the western smart boys gathered to brag about how the were doing in business and socially and to complain about the government and taxes. I had finished my grub and was about to leave when the town's most prominent hardware and auto supply storekeeper and his blonde wife called me over to their table. Mr. Storekeeper's wife was a natural blonde with very light skin and extra-light blue eyes, but she helped her natural blonde be a little lighter. They started telling me that it was going to be summer real soon, and I knew that, and they wanted a pair of matched riding horses that would haul good in a trailer so they could join the social set that would be going to the rodeos, parades, and the horse shows during the summer months with their lead, load and show horses. Me and this hardware dealer didn't have too much in common. He wasn't as rich as he would like for you to believe and wasn't as smart as he had himself believing and not as handsome a young man as his new young blonde wife seemed to think he was, that is from a horse trader's point of view. I felt that if I was going to have to do business with him and her, I ought to make some money. So I went to telling them the assortment of horses that I had, and they made an appointment to come out to my ranch Sunday morning and look my horses over and pick out what they would want for this summer playing around. I told them I'd sure be glad to show them what I had that wasn't already spoken for and I'd bet we could have some horse business. Well, they showed up Sunday morning about the time that good people were going to church, and both were all rigged out in western clothes and had some new fancy saddles that they had bought even before they got their horses. They looked to me like there wouldn't be any way to keep them from taking some horse away form me before the day was over. I had a pretty good stock of riding horses in the corral that I knew were of various kinds of quality, but I had already learned that smart people knew more about picking their horse than I did so I just let them talk and visit and caught horses for them to rub around on and ride. Of course, we spent a good hour getting the stirrups on these new saddles the right length so that would feel comfortable trying out these good horses. Each had ridden three or four apiece out in a small pasture and hadn't quite found the exact horse yet. We were saddling a couple more for them to tryout when this dainty blonde walked back through the hall of my barn where I had several good horses in a stable, and right at the back of the hall of the barn, I had two nice palomino mares in stalls across the hall from each other. This gal walked down through the barn and found the two palominos and simply began carrying on and calling for Rex, her husband, to hurry back. Well, he left me holding the two horses and started going to the back of the barn like she had a

Ben K. Green's buried treasure, "Horse Tales"

In "Horse Tales", famous horse doctor and humorist Ben K. Green shares his growing-up years, telling antic and often amazing tales of horses, cattle, mules, and even people, set in the times "before air conditioning and soft children." This classic collection, ten years out of print, is still guaranteed to make your sides ache with laughter. Highlighted with sketches by William Moyers, John Hampton, and Joe Beeler, three distinguished members of the Cowboy Artists Of America, this book is a delight to readers who love horses or simply love a good story.

A key to Ben Green's other stories

More easy reading autobiographical stories by Ben K. Green. This second edition combines in one volume three sets of tales previously published separately as "When I Was Just A Colt", "Up Fool's Hill Ahorseback", and "Beauty." Like most of Ben K. Green's books, these are groups of short stories that can be enjoyed a little at a time and don't need to be read in any particular order. The original volumes have been out of print for many years and are virtually impossible to find. They all have the flavor of real old-time cowboy wit and humor. Horse Tales is a must-have book for anyone who has enjoyed Ben K. Green's other stories."When I Was Just a Colt" relates revealing episodes from when the author was a small boy. The first is how he helped in the round up of his family's cattle. Among the others is how he bought his first horse from an itinerant preacher.Up Fool's Hill Ahorseback" relates several tales from his teenage years. Among them are a mule drive with his friend Trouble, and the sale of two palomino horses to a blonde and her husband. :Beauty" is a collection of stories about Ben K. Green's favorite horse. It relates how they grew up together and reads as a tribute to a dearly beloved friend. Scattered throughout are true to life illustrations drawn by fine western artists. These will be familiar to readers of Ben K Green's other books.
