It'll pull you into a place that's no longer there...

Seems to me it was an unusually humid mid-July morning when I parked my Datsun B-210 hatchback in front of the Vergennes, Vermont Public Library. I was supposed to be in town to sell radio advertising for a small FM station I'd recently started on the New York side of Lake Champlain, but a hand-lettered, cardboard "book sale today" sign drew me to stop by the library first. "There are more books upstairs," an elderly librarian pointed with a classic whisper, after watching me quickly browse the disorganized contents of two tables. Turns out, "upstairs" meant the attic, where it was oppressively hot, and I found myself very alone. Among the many paperbacks with torn covers and Reader's Digest condensed books flowing from partially crushed cartons, was a pristine copy of Winston Estes' HOME FRONT, its dust jacket covered in library plastic. Why such a nicely preserved volume was exiled up there is anyone's guess. I picked it up and began reading. A few minutes later, I found myself scrounging for a quarter with which to buy the book, and then heading home to get back into this 1940s portal that has long since closed. Why this boring story about finding Home Front? I suppose it's simply because the book puts one in a story mood. Estes captures the value of everyday life among rather ordinary people in what was a rather typical WWII stateside venue. His use of linking the first words of Chapter 1 to the work's final sentences gives a brand of closure that haunts the reader with the reality that change is inevitable and memories are the only currency accepted when we want another glimpse of our cherished past. Because the book is set in pre-airconditioned Georgia, a summer read will give this story additional ambiance. Enjoy it when you'll be by yourself for a few days. That way, nobody from the 21st century will be able to pull you out of a HOME FRONT that one could not find any other way.
