Low-key romance that strikes a real note of accuracy

Johnson is a true find of an author for anyone who wants to read romances with real life conflicts. Home Again is related to What She Wants for Christmas, another wonderful book by Johnson, though there is no indication on the cover that either is part of a formal series. The conflict of Home Again is how a woman resolves conflicts between her family and her new love interest. At first, Rebecca's relationship with Sam only causes problems between her teenage son and her, but soon, the rest of her family pipes up with their own issues, which have been brought into the light by Rebecca's spending more and more time with Sam. The solution of these dilemmas evolves itself over time and in stages. Also, Rebecca's teenage son and his own struggles with his father, his new stepmother, and his mother's new love interest feel authentic. Johnson often incorporates the viewpoints of teens or pre-teens into her stories, and it never feels schmaltzy or cliched. Both Rebecca and Sam are sympathetic characters, and though their experiences with their families have differed radically, their needs are very similar. Their journey to love and home is quite touching.

Wonderful!!!!

"Johnson skillfully creates an engaging drama...[Home Again] has volatile emotional chemistry, interesting conflicts in the other relationships, and sparkles with humor," says Romantic Times. Rebecca Halstead wanted a rose arbor. A simple thing, really, yet neither of the men in her life was willing to help her. Her teenage son, Alan, had more important things on his mind--such as wreaking havoc on her relationship with his boss, Sam Ballard. And Sam? Well, Sam just didn't seem to want the kind of commitment the arbor symbolized. To him, it stood for all the homey things he wanted no part of. But family meant everything to Rebecca, and quite frankly, Sam wasn't offering anything to replace it with. True, his kisses left her breathless, but Rebecca needed more. She'd damn well build her own arbor, with or without him. A 1994 RITA Award Finalist, Home Again is a touching story about family and love. If you like romance, you'll love this novel. I guarantee it!!
