This novel, the first in the on-going series by McKelvy about Jimmy Clark, treats not only the Vietnam War era draft question, but also the falseness and smarminess current then (and now) in mainstream American Protestantism. This work offers a trenchant look at what Divinity School at a major liberal university was (and is) like and the hollowness that underlies the whole post-Christian enterprise. Though many may see the truth of what McKelvy describes, this book is not for the faint of heart. It turns an eye on this era that is often too discerning for those who are not ready to see what is there. I use this book to discuss this period with students of Theology, but need to introduce it carefully before I let them loose on it. I recommend it highly for those who are willing to take a serious look at the collapse of Christianity in the US in the last 50 years and those who are willing to look at societal hypocrisy. Those who are happily ignorant of these things should stay away!
