A fast-paced thriller featuring New York District Attorney Butch Karp going head-to-head with a crooked wannabe mayor, a rap star, and corrupt priests. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I was a bit surprised by the ratings I saw, 1 and 2 stars? To me, this one was the best in a long time, made me look forward to the next one. Marlene wasn't as unbelievable as in the recent past, Butch was, well Butch. So if you are a fan of the series and have not purchased this one yet, you really should. If some of the negative reviews scare you, go to the library and check it out

After reading the last 7 Butch and Marlene stories, I read this one and was not dissapointed at all. But I get the feeling that this may be the end of the series, where is Tannanbaum going to go next? is Butch going to be the next DA for New York County? or like the author is he going to end up in the Western part of the United States? Let's face it you can never remove a true New Yorker from New York City. It will be interesting to see if the author comes out with another Butch and Marlene Story. Hope he does I will buy it, and enjoy it.
LONG BOOK, BUT GREAT

This is one of the longest of the Butch Karp novels. But it was well worth the read. Covered several different crimes, but tied it all together by the end of the book. This book gets an A on my list. GREAT JOB.

Methinks the critics of this book doth protest too much. It makes me wonder if they are commenting as friends and family of the purported (and jilted?) former ghost writer of this series, because they don't seem to have read the same book I did. In fact, I wonder if they actually have read the previous series (a case in point, one of the critics says that the reader of Hoax will not recognize Tran, contending that the last he saw Tran, our former Viet Cong leader was destitute. This reader somehow missed that Tran led his gangland troops against the West Virginia bad guys in Absolute Rage). It is that sort of questionable authenticity that seems to indicate that the critics have some other ax to grind. While Hoax did have some moments of down-time, and a few that stretched the bounds of credulity (though with a sort of fun tongue-in-cheek wink), I found this 16th in the Karp series to overall be the best of them. The characters we love are more richly drawn than they have been in any previous book, including, at last, the sort of background that allows us to understand what motivates Karp & Co. Those readers who are taken back by the review that says the "new" author of the book--and I suspect Mr. Tannenbaum is more than just "a name and credentials"--needs to learn to "show and not tell" are being deceived. This books does a much better job of showing than any Karp book to date; in fact,it's the difference between a comic book version and this Hoax, a novel that goes beyond the crime thriller genre. Yes, Hoax is more complicated than the earlier versions, though the ends are neatly woven and tied up nicely, and more philosophical. But in a good way. Do yourself a favor and read this book and then you be the judge.
