The Tennessee 1st (Carter's) Cavalry Regiment was organized in November, 1862, using what was originally the 3rd (Brazelton's), later 14th (Carter's) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Brazelton's Battalion was also called the 2nd Battalion and the 5th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion.
