The 16th Alabama Infantry regiment was assembled at Courtland, AL, on August 6, 1861. The unit was ordered to Knoxville, TN, then Kentucky where it fought at Fishing Creek (lost 64 men) under General Felix Zollicoffer. Later it was assigned to General Sterling Wood's regiment (with the 33rd AL, 44th TN, and 32nd and 33rd MS regiments). It lost 162 men at the battle of Shiloh.
