In a nutshell: After enduring marriage to a profligate gambler, Annabelle Carruthers finds herself frightened and alone when her husband dies. Desperate, she offers herself as mistress to the Earl of Darkwood. He allows her to think he accepts her offer while secretly just wanting to help her, knowing she will not take charity. My opinion: I do like this story--it's part of my favorite series, after all. However, there is an inconsistency in the story regarding her husband's will. Otherwise, it is a typical Marion Chesney Regency with some kooky supporting characters bringing some comedy relief to another somewhat serious plotline. And as is usual with Ms Chesney's Regencies, she drops little historical details here and there, sometimes on topics and in places that make little sense. :o) This book is connected to The Scandalous Lady Wright & Her Grace's Passion.
She Had But One Thing of Value Left to Offer...Herself!

Annabelle Carruthers could only dream of being kissed by such a dashing man as Lord Darkwood. For she herself was locked in misery - married to a rake who drank and gambled their lives into financial and social ruin. His sudden death - and rumors of spies and treachery - only made matters worse. Burdened with his gambling debts, Annabelle feared she was on her way to the poorhouse. What else could she do but offer herself as mistress to Lord Darkwood! Darkwood, however, was too much of a gentleman to take advantage of a lady such as Annabelle. Still, he was quite interested in rumors of her husband's espionage - a curiosity that would soon place them both in grave danger.... Marion Chesney's regencies are fun and amusing. Her characters are not the normal stereotypes, nor are the setting of her novels. Overall, her writing keeps you interest and amused (and sometimes laughing out loud).
