Book Overview

Drafted to fight in Vietnam, cousins Richie Rinko and Ely Rinko do their best to keep from being killed, but fate takes them to hell and back.

Richie Rinko and Ely Rinko are cousins raised as brothers. Richie, the more practical one, does his best to take care of his little brother, Ely, the company screwup. Sergeant Russell Madison rules the platoon like an iron hand, but he's devilish in his methods. However, everyone is concerned that they won't go home except in a body bag.

When the North Vietnamese Army crosses the demilitarized zone into Quang Tri, the war takes on a different aspect during the Tet Offensive. The NVA attacks the entire country of South Vietnam, pushing the US Army's 1st Calvary into the killing fields of a war gone wrong.

Richie and Ely are wounded during the battle to liberate Quang Tri City from the advancing NVA. Out of the fight they're transferred to the Army Hospital at Yokohama, Japan. Both of Richie's thighs were broken by a sniper's bullets, but Ely suffered a loss of half a lung when he was taken down only hours before. Ely's wounds heal, but he'll never outlive a case of shell shock. Both of the brothers love Mei, the Japanese nurse who nurses them back to health.

From that moment on, they become rivals in a different world at home in the states. Ely marries Mei, but it was a mistake from the beginning. They wage a different sort of war for the love of their lives that could only end in heartbreak for one or all of them.
