Unusual and Absorbing

Highbinders is a well-written, suspenseful novel that held my interest throughout. I particularly enjoyed the Canadian setting, which is something different from most of the books I've read. I also enjoyed the ending, and found it to be satisfying and believable.

Highbinders by Shane Kennedy

I liked this book. The action moves along at a good pace and has lots of excitement. Most importantly, I found the story entirely believable. It follows several characters and moves back and forth in time seamlessly. The way the author blended fact with fiction made it difficult to know where one left off and the other began. In one instance he mentions the CIA assassinating President Kennedy, and although I doubt they were the culprits, it is still believable. I found a couple of minor things that I thought distracted a little from the author's credibility regarding small arms. On page 221 he talks about Dominion standardizing the gages of hand and other guns. To the best of my knowledge (I used to hand load my own ammunition) the word gauge (not gage) refers to the bore size of shotguns. The word calibre should be used to describe the bore size of handguns and rifles. On page 222 he writes about the sale of bullets. I believe he means cartridges. Bullets are purchased by hand loaders to produce cartridges which also include primers and shell casings. The only other nitpicking I was able do was regarding the term "knots per hour" on page 34. "Knots" is the correct term and means nautical miles per hour. Most readers would probably never notice these trivial items. I thought that the book read very well and it certainly kept my interest all the way through to the extent that I found it hard to put down. I recommend this book to any reader who enjoys suspenseful action and who is interested in what goes on behind the scenes that are of a military or "intelligence" nature. ONE WORD - "WOW"

A VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT BOOK ....AND STORY LINE . A MUST READ FOR BOOK LOVERS EVERYWHERE ....

Who knew what those Canadians were up to?

I must admit this is the first Canadian author I have read. Americans are always so insular, but I was drawn immediately into the culture and mindset of the country to the north. This book reads like a mini-series. The action just keeps taking you along on a very interesting ride. I loved his characters, they were so believable. I especially loved his female characters. It is a book about the larger world of war and intrigue, but also the tiny world of relationships. Relationship both within a family and between lovers. I really liked this book and am glad to have been introduced to this new author. I believe he has quite a future ahead of him.

This is a good book

Highbinders is an exciting and well-written story composed in the classic action-adventure style. A tale about gunrunning brothers squabbling over the family company, there is enough drama, fighting, and financial double-dealing to keep anyreader happy. The author even leaves room in the story for the romance between Seth Delaney (one of the sons) and Tanina Devirago (his very sexy stockbroker girlfriend) to develop naturally as part of the plot. I was surprised to learn that Kennedy is from Canada since I usually find Canadian literature to be tedious. I also liked the way the author used the cities of Toronto and Vancouver as backdrops to the story. I really liked this book. If you enjoy Leon Uris, you will like this book. A final comment: What is the deal with the Quid character?
