This is a different kind of story in the Trailsman series. It grabs you right in the beginning and doesn't let go till the very end.I like my westerns to be straight up and not a convoluted mystery as to who the good guys and the bad guys are. This is definately not a mystery or a who dunnit. The killer makes himself ,or is it itself, known over and over again by repeated killings, leaving evidence and uttering ungodly screams. Even Skye Fargo is at a loss to figure out what kind of perpetrator is committing these horrors. For a while, I thought that maybe we were going to find it to be a mythical demon or even a Sasquach mountain man. Or was this going to have a Fantasty or a Science Fiction ending? Despite my fears,Skye solves the problem and in the end we got a great western saga, with a bit of history thrown in along with all the good stuff of a well written western. There are two great mysteries in the story.First, we have a great cover showing our hero on horseback, his hands obviously tied behind his back,a noose around his neck, and surrounded by five desperados, preparing to "watch him dance a strangulation jig". How's he possibly going to get out of this one ? And who or what is doing the killing? Tempted as I was to give up,the suspense and great storytelling kept me interested to the end. There was some logic to it all,Skye twigged onto it,I didn't; will you?

a gripping western

Jon Sharpe displays his mastery over this Trailsman title too. It just took me two nights to finish it.Mr Sharpe perfectly manages to keep the reader alert and in suspense throughout the story.Horrible and sometimes steamy scenes run one after the other and then a shocking final. Some scenes like going out in the mist may sound a little bit unreasonable but it is a western you may enjoy all the same.
