Enter the Ex

When I first read the description for "High School Debut" vol. 6, I thought "Oh no, not the ex!" Anyone who's read a decent amount of shojo can guess that I was more worried about the plot than the characters. "The ex" scenario is really overdone in shojo. It's so predictable: the heroine is intimidated by the ex, wonders whether the boyfriend is really over her, etc. However, I was glad to find that Kawahara had a different idea. In the beginning of vol. 6, Haruna is feeling really happy about her relationship with Yoh. She's walking on air. Then one day, she helps out a girl who's being bothered by a "pervert" on the train. Haruna talks a little to the girl, and finds out that she's having trouble getting over her ex-boyfriend. Haruna, being Haruna, decides to do everything she can to help and encourage this girl, and the girl starts to rely on her more and more. In a seemingly unrelated conflict, Yoh has been acting depressed because his ex keeps calling him. It's pretty easy to figure out what's going on for the reader, but Haruna doesn't figure it out. When she does, she's worried that Yoh might still like his ex, but she still wants to help her out. And Yoh's solution is to just ignore the whole situation. This volume was sweet and funny. I really liked Yoh's ex. She might annoy some because she cries so much, but it gets to the point where it's funny. All of "High School Debut"'s characters have a funny quirk, and this is hers. I could also relate to her because I cry a lot, too. I also liked the contrast between Yoh and Haruna's personalities here. They clash, but it's good to see them deal with the conflict. It shows that they're willing to work on their relationship. Vol. 6 was a good one, despite some predictability. That doesn't really matter much anyway, because it's the characters and story that make the manga.
