A good introduction to the life of the wild turkey

Sometime in the seventies, the word "turkey" came to be used to refer to someone or something that was dull, foolish or uninteresting. That is a misnomer, as the wild turkey is quite intelligent, as anyone that has tried to hunt them can attest. Despite their bulk, they are capable of flight at a significant rate of speed. This book is a brief chronicle of the life of the wild turkeys; it begins with a description of the laying of the eggs, goes through adulthood and includes the social structure of a flock. There is a dynamic hierarchy among the males and the females will band together to protect the chicks. Benjamin Franklin campaigned to have the turkey declared the national bird. While no one can argue that the bald eagle is a worthy selection, the turkey would certainly have been one as well.
