Following the events of Liars, Cheats & Thieves, master thief, Eva Bennett, ex-jester, Hester, and High Inquisitor of the Church of Kosmos, Wallace Norville depart from their companions, and head to Armol City. Though the world is already at war with itself, they must deliver news of the great evil they discovered in Denwood Forest, whilst searching for the fabled Library of Lochru, and convince the Queen of Armol to send reinforcements to the Iron Gate - the only thing standing between Denwood Forest and the rest of the world.

Colonel Caspar Perero is the youngest man to have reached his rank in the Demorian Army for generations. Demor has been invaded by the forces of Halkany, and Caspar must do what he can to protect his beloved country from threats both foreign, and deomestic.

Floreneth Varkone returns to his homeland of Palitan on a personal errand. He must choose between loyalty to himself, and loyalty to his countrymen. Palitan has suffered most from Queen Melania of Halkany's war, yet Floreneth is also keenly aware of the threat from Denwood Forest. He must convince the Jarls that some evils are greater than others.

Cardinal Luen works tirelessly to convince the mad queen of Halkany to put an end to her war. With no word from Wallace Norville - and sensing betrayal - he promotes Rowina Hughes to High Inquisitor, and sends her, along with a sorceress by the name of Carys on a mission to learn what they can from Norville.

The world is at war, but a far more dangerous and secretive enemy is rising. Now is the time for heroes, kings and queens to decide how they will face it.
