In the further adventures of Josh McBroom, the crops grow so fast, you'd better step out of the way when you plant corn, red barns turn blue in the cold, and words freeze still in mid-air. As fresh as ever.--Booklist.
Imagine a one-acre farm so rich the soil "ought to be kept in a bank." Be warned that crops grow so fast you'd better jump out of the way when you plant corn. The stalks will shoot up and skin your nose. That's the world of Josh McBroom, the lovable teller of tall tales, who is now celebrating a quarter century of keeping his readers in stiches. Here, collected in an anniversary edition are 3 of the famous tales with Quentin Blake's spirited illustrations. A man who would rather sit on a porcupine than stretch the truth, Mc Broom tells about the winter of the Big Freeze when red barns turn blue with the cold. Even words freeze stiff in mid-air. And then a ghost comes knocking... And there arrives a summer so dry the McBroom cow gives powdered milk. Another time a tornado carries off his wonderful topsoil, and he tracks it down with a compass cat, whose tail always points north.

A book my husband loved as a child and one our children enjoyed just as much!
My favorite books as a kid
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
I loved the McBroom books as a kid. Unfortunately, I didn't have the books anymore. So, now that I have my own kids, I decided to buy these books. The stories are still there and I give them a rating of 5 out of 5. BUT!!! These are not the hardback books that I used to have. The hardbacks had better pictures and larger print for kids to be more entertained with and easier for them to read. If you haven't read these before, then I highly recommend them. If you are buying for your kids to read, get the hardbacks if you can find them.

I read this book in grade school and I couldn't put it down. Sid Fleischman is the best tall tale writer ever born. If you are very imaginative, than this book is for you!
