This is the story of a May/December romance. Henry is 68 years old and Kate is 28. They have a child together and then Henry becomes ill. People from his past gather around him - his estranged daughter and his ex-wife. During the time that he is well, though he and Kate are very much in love, we see that he still has unfinished business with Cynthia, his ex-wife and they actually end up having one more roll in the hay, so to speak. While Henry is dying, Kate has a craving for Day, the vegetarian bi-sexual who's Henry's caretaker. While somewhat endearing, this novel is also annoying and does not come up to Thurm's other works. The people and their motives come off as upbeat in the book but they wouldn't make it in the light of real life. Also, I don't see how anyone could face a set of circumstances and debilitations in as upbeat a manner as Henry. The book does make for a funny cast of characters around the death bed and a good read. Thurm, even when not at her best, is still quite good.
