We first used the SRA Basic Reading Series with our own children back in the 1970's, and when our granddaughters began home schooling this year, we discovered that the phonics materials they were using were not as well designed pedagogically, and furthermore that the books were both boring and confusing because of the very unnatural use of the English language. I remembered that we had used the SRA materials at home with our children, and so we ordered the textbooks and workbooks for the first three levels to use with our grandchildren. The first three titles are: A Pig Can Jig, A Hen in a Fox's Den, and Six Ducks in a Pond, and there are workbooks and readers for six levels in this series. We were able to begin using them immediately in October and they are "world's better" than the materials provided in their home school curriculum. In fact our older granddaughter was able to work through the first five units of the workbook for A Pig Can Jog (Basic Reading Series, Level A) in only one week's time, and was very much engaged in the learning process. (This was about 30 pages of exercises) She could also read the first story in A Pig Can Jig, Part 2, well beyond the level she had reached in the exercises! If you must chose between them, the workbooks are probably more important than the readers in engaging the child's mind with the learning to read process. I have been a linguist by profession for 40 years and my wife and I have worked with mother tongue speakers of many languages in Papua New Guinea and Cameroon, Africa, as they have developed beginning reading materials for their own language groups. I would unreservedly recommend the SRA Basic Reading Series as being the best phonics approach I know of in American English. (We also use the SRA Reading labs in Papua New Guinea for helping adult readers improve their command of English.)
