A favorite wonderful resource!

I looked up this book just now because I wanted to see if it's still in print before mentioning it in an article I'm writing for my homeschooling website. I think it's absolutely wonderful - just a small book, but packed with great ideas. Here's something I wrote about it awhile back: One little book is just too amazing to part with: Help Your Child Learn Number Skills --- by Usborne Publishing. It covers the basic things a child generally covers in the elementary years, but probably covers them in a much more effective way than a text or workbook or program could. In the introduction, it says: "Many parents question their ability to help their children with math because they were not very good at the subject themselves at school. This book is not about sitting down and doing sums with your child, however. It is aimed at helping children develop a positive attitude to math and there is plenty you can do to encourage this in an informal way. Many basic mathematical ideas can be picked up naturally and at an early age in normal daily life. Throughout the book the emphasis is on helping children to think for themselves and to find their own solutions to mathematical problems. Children learn better this way and remember more of what they have learnt. They also learn best if they are having fun, which is why there is so much emphasis on learning through play and games."
