Book Overview

Fifteen to twenty percent of dogs are born with a tendency towards introversion and fearfulness, leading to behaviors like uncontrolled submissive urination, fear-aggression, and inability to bond with humans. With understanding and the right training, fearful dogs need not be condemned as bad pets; rather, they can become some of the happiest and most deeply bonded dogs around-the epitome of great pets.

I'm so glad I found this bood!

We recently adopted a dog, from the south, who had been in very abusive living situations and was incrediby timid. She hid from us, in the house, she panicked at every sound or person she encountered outside. I was very worried that we may have made a mistake. This book helped me feel so much better, just reading that other people have gone through this same thing and come out the other side with happy healthy dogs. The advice in this book and the sharing of others experiences has made the process much easier for us. I particularly appreciated the stories from other dog owners that are included. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who is adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue organization!

Excellent tips that work

We fostered an abused dog who was afraid of people, cars, leashes, leaving the back yard, leaving the front yard, anything new. This book was the only source that really helped. Applied her tips and advice and our foster dog blossomed and overcame her fears. She's happily adopted now and her new owner reports that she is doing awesome - loves going places and meeting people now. We didn't know if it would even be possible. If you have a shy or previously abused dog, this book really helps and her tips WORK!

Shy pup.

When I first got my German Shephard Pup, she was 14 weeks old. She was skinny, malnourished, very timid of people and particually other dogs. She would shake uncontrolably outside our home, and she would submisively wee for every person she met on the street. This book helped me understand what my dog was feeling, and of course most importantly it helped me deal with her behavior. Highly recommended!

Rescue help

I recently rescued a shy, abused German Shepherd dog and wanted to read all I could before he came home. This book started me on the right track to make the transition smooth to his new home. The advise in this book also matches all the advice I have gotten from my training instructor that teaches me and my new dog in our Shy Dog Class. He has come a long way using the techniques and rewards found in this book. It is definately worth every penny towards having a happier, calmer, companion.

Rescuers Please Note This Book

As a member of Friends of County Animal Shelters in San Diego, I have met many dogs whose tendency to shyness has been aggravated by the loss of home that brought them to the shelter. If you choose to offer a home to a shelter or breed rescue dog, consider whether this book might not offer just the help you need!
