Hellbent & Heartfirst

What could be better than a one-time rodeo cowboy with a beat-up pickup truck who wears his jeans like a down home boy? To Jacyn Boaz, he seems like the perfect distraction from her guilty conscience and the stress of working with relief organizations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. 3.5 stars - An odd but pleasant read and so much better than Sims' first book

Hellbent & Heartfirst had a totally different feel from the books I've been reading lately, but I really liked it. Sims' post Katrina south is populated by really offbeat characters in addition to her leads: perpetually hungover lucky lady relief worker Jacyn who is also a professor on sabbatical, and gorgeous Jimmy Wayne, former rodeo cowboy, who now hunts the demons preying on the hurricanes' beleagured survivors. I liked the relationship between the pair who meet in a bar years after a one night stand and head off for a second one night stand, which somehow becomes more. The story itself is sort of a meandering read, in fact it reads very much like two related short stories missing the stronger connection that would have pulled the two parts together more cohesively. Still for some reason I was happy just to enjoy the texture of the words which gave the book more of a "literature" feel -- edification vs entertainment -- as the story meandered on. I'm not quite sure whether the story ends here or if there will be a sequel, since Sims seems to write standalones, but I wouldn't mind reading more about this pair and I'm glad I gave this author a second chance even though I hated and didn't finish her vampire book Midnight Work.

interesting and unusual romantic fantasy

Anthropology Professor Jacyn Boaz takes a leave of absence from her teaching position at the University of Texas in Austin. Jacyn feels it is important to volunteer in her hometown so she has agreed to help Oxfam in Biloxi, Mississippi cleaning up from Katrina. Jacyn meets self-proclaimed magic guru Jimmy Wayne Broadus, a beer guzzling barbeque dining, guitar-playing Texan. The hunk insists he is searching for a deadly child-eating lamia attacking the bone weary survivors of Katrina especially the homeless refugees. To their mutual surprise, they are attracted to one another and soon after meeting Jaclyn and Jimmy Wayne make love. However, he continues with his quest traveling to La Batre, Alabama to consult with a voodoo warlock and a witch in order to understand what he must do to destroy the lamia. To his delight Jacyn joins him on the hunt. This is an interesting and unusual romantic fantasy that provides a unique fresh look at the aftermath of Katrina as the Gulf Coast turns into a massive third world refugee encampment filled with haunted people wondering how their lives were washed away leaving them adrift in trailers. The lead couple is also an odd pairing that works as each finds something they desperately need in the other; she a sense of purpose and he a grounding. Although the shifting geography makes for abrupt changes, fans will enjoy the escapades of the two Js as they battle evil whether it is a cursed necklace or the Lamia as their way to help the Katrina victims.
