This book is a closer to the Falconhurst series. Taking place about 18 years after the end of Master of Falconhurst, this is the story of Drum Maxwell, the son of Drummage (Drum Major) Maxwell and Sophie Maxwell (the daughter of Hammond Maxwell from Mandingo and the rest of the Falconhurst series). It starts out in Boston with Drum and his guardians, who were Union soldiers occupying Benson at the time of the Civil War. Drum was brought up like a white in Boston, not knowing he was part black until he went to a brothel in Boston. Then he leaves Boston and moves south and finds prejudice abounds, first in New Orleans and then in Alabama. He restocks Falconhurst with servants, including a Lucretia Borgia type called Morning Star. It is as full of sex and violence as the rest of the Falconhurst books. A scene with a character called Harlequin, who is actually Drum's overseer, figures toward the middle of the book. A gang scene figures toward the end. Unlike Master of Falconhurst, though, this book does not end with tragedy. If you like the rest of the Falconhurst books, you will like this closer to the Falconhurst series.
