A study of the Book of Hebrews is a study of the Bible. Hebrews contains a commentary on the rest of the Bible. This study aid for the book of Hebrews contains hundreds of references to the Old and New Testament. It is organized in outline form and designed to help you build your understanding of the Bible.The purpose of Hebrews is to show the differences between the Old Covenant under the Jewish System and the New Covenant provided by Jesus. The Jewish sacrificial system was designed as a "shadow" of the real thing (8:5 "serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things", 10:1 "the law having a shadow of good things to come"). A shadow shows a basic outline of the object, but lacks clarity. Only the real object has any power. The priesthood and sacrifices of the Old Testament was only a vague image of the real priest and sacrifice necessary to remove mankind's sin and restore his relationship to God.The second purpose of the book is to point out the dangers of not growing as a Christian. The original audience was composed of believers who were entertaining the idea of returning to the old ways of the Jewish sacrificial system, a prevalent teaching of that time (Acts 15:24). There were false teachers seducing them (Hebrews 13:9), and they were not moving forward in their faith (Hebrews 5:12). Saving faith is just the foundation for the Christian life to be built upon (Hebrews 6:1).
