Great Book. If you want to learn how to work on heavy trucks, this is a great place to start.

Not just for the deisel mechs

My review is for the consideration of commercial truckers. As a driver of heavy duty trucks, I found "truck driver" literature lacking in details regarding not just identification of tractor or trailer parts/equipment, but also function...particularly regarding pneumatic braking systems, tires and rims, and suspension. I wasn't looking to become a deisel mech, but I can assure any trucker who has a strong desire to UNDERSTAND their truck systems, functions, and parts to invest in this tech manual. The book is replete with clearly illustrated exmaples and photos. Thus far, when I have a question about a pre- or post-trip inspected part of my vehicle, I've always found the unknown part in this book, its function, and troubleshooting guidelines. If you wish a deeper understanding of your dual air brake circuitry...it's in here. Brake chambers, drums, linings, cams...you name it...you'll find it in here. The mystical "bushings" for the newbie driver...I now know what they are...where they are...their function...and how to determine their continued service. Wish more than a laydriver's understanding of heavy duty truck transmissions? It's in here. I always wondered precisely just how the air compressor works...now I know and understand it. It will make communicating with your mechanic a two-way street. One doesn't have to become a mechanic to understand how and why their trucks operate the way they do...or shouldn't. Ultimately, understanding your truck systems, especially those designed to stop, steer, and support your vehicle, will help make you a more professional and safer driver. Note: The manual does not address the anatomy and physiology of engines.

A great introduction to heavy-duty truck systems

We used this book in our diesel technician class. The book gives you an excellent introduction to every aspect of a heavy-duty truck. I usually shy away from books written by more than one author because of lack of continuity or overcoverage in certain areas. In the case of this book, the authors have done a fantasic job of explaining the topics without any assumptions. The book does a good job in covering cluthes, standard transmission, torque converters, drive shafts, axles, and automatic transmissions. On the subject of brakes, I recommend Delmar's "Today's Technician: Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Brakes." If your thinking of buying a book on this subject matter, you can't go wrong with this selection. Be aware that a third edition has been released.
