I was given HEART PATHS FOR HARD TIMES during a time of deep grieving and exhaustion, when I was too numb to reach out for what I needed to heal. The subtitle of the book is "Bridges for Coping with Loss and Change," and I found those bridges in this gem of a book. No kidding--it's the kind of book you'll want in your library for those hard times that come into all our lives...and the kind of book your friends and family would welcome in their hard times. I've given it to several people I care about, no matter what their "hard time." The collecton of stories reminded me I truly wasn't the only one who'd struggled with these issues. Most helpful, though, were the reminders to reframe my thinking--seeing this time as an opportunity. The stress rating scale was very helpful. The reminder to INVOLVE my body in working in the garden, or massage, got me out of living in my mind. The reminder to find my way back to gratitude was especially significant. And the listing of support systems that helped others reminded me that I had some, too. The book was like a wise, good friend there with comfort but no demands--something I welcomed in my deep fatigue. You could skip around and read a bit at a time or work your way from the stories in the front to the suggested activities in the second part. Ms. Searcy has given us a gift out of her own grieving and losses. My guess is that the wounded healer is the most effective one--she surely is. I can't say enough good things about HEART PATHS.
