What do we value?

What is the nature of a treasure? What is the Christians treasure? How can a believer preserve and increase their spiritual riches? These and other concerns are considered by this eminent Puritan minister. If we know what a tresure is and what our heart(our inner man)truly values, this will enable one to have an accurate assessment of their spiritual condition. For where our treasure is, that is a revelation of where the affections of our hearts reside. One thing that is unmistakeably clear in the writings of the Puritans is that they had their priorities properly placed. The heavenlimindedness of their books cannot be overlooked or denied. 'Heart Treasure'is another spiritual gem from 'A Master In Israel'. An important element whereby Christians grow in grace is the habit of meditating on divine truth. Oliver Heywood makes this observation "It is the chief agent in fastening divine truths on the mind, the knowledge of these truths we receive by hearing, reading and the social intercourse of pious thought;but it is meditation alone that gives them a permanent dwelling place in our memories and makes them our own."There is something about meditating on truth that benefits us as nothing else can. Mr.Heywood has much wisdom re 'The Christian and the World'as did the Puritans in general "the more you admit the world into your hearts, the more you thrust out divine things... worldly mindedness is directly opposed to heavenly treasures... let not your heart be in the world, though your heads and hands are in it." The chapter on 'Preservation and increase of a Christians treasure has some of the following divisions:fill not your hearts with the world, mortify the corruption of your hearts, observe the impulses of God's Spirit,be frequent in examining the heart and diligently employ whatever gifts you have received... . There are a rich feast of spiritual delights set forth with much eloquence thoughout this unique treatise. If you are looking for a book that will help you be more heavenliminded 'Heart Tresure' would be invaluable in that area.
