"'On a hot, but truly lovely, June morning, the word came: ALL worthy male members of the Church could receive the priesthood. At first I doubted the truthfulness of the words. Then I hoped- hoped that if the words were true, I was not dreaming. As the day wore on, I laughed, I cried, I shouted, I silently and openly prayed words of thanks to my Heavenly Father.' Mary Frances Sturlaugson's prayers had been answered. The way was now clear for her to enter the temple of the Lord, receive her endowments, and serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Africa! That's where Mary wanted to go, to take the gospel to the Dark Continent, to her own people. But the call was to the Texas San Antonio Mission. And to Texas she went, full of fear and foreboding, full of faith and conviction, anxious to share her burgeoning testimony and teach the gospel. With determination and courage Mary fills her mission- but not before she encounters more of the prejudice and hostility she had experienced all her life. Humiliation and trials in abundance plague Mary as she strives to devote herself to the work. With memories of her impoverished childhood, longing for some contact from her estranged family, and battling with her still somewhat rebellious soul, Mary nevertheless pushes forward. Near the end of her mission she rejoices in being called to teach blacks, and she delights to find that many are receptive and waiting for the message she brings them with such joy. Not wanting her mission to end, Mary pleads for more time, but realizes finally that she must get on with her life. Returning to an uncertain future, Mary resumes her education at Brigham Young University, becomes the author of A Soul So Rebellious, and finds she has touched the hearts of thousands with her story. Its sequel too will reach out with a warmth and love only rarely encountered. He Restoreth My Soul is a joyous celebration of the gospel in action, a celebration all are invited to share."
