Silly Reality

I loved this book the moment I picked it up. As a classroom teacher I understand the need for appropriateness and the constant struggle to motivate children to read and prepare them for the struggles they will face. With childhood obesity rampant and popularity of eating disorders and morphed body image issue children need to be aware of "healthy" and what exactly it looks like. Hazel shows both images, that eating too much makes fat and un-healthy. She also shows the other extreme of not eating and over exercising. This too has an effect on your body that is hard to live with. The author shows these grown up images in a hilarious rhyming manner that is fun for children to read. The children love the little notes to stop here if you want a happy ending, but to continue you see Hazel is who she is and goes back to her old ways, but children know better than hazel to not over eat and exercise.

childhood favorite

There's nothing wrong with this book. Conceptions such as pigging out, fat camp, and busting a seam...these all belong to the world of adults. What chidren get from this book are a fun, whimsical view at a pretty silly witch. Hazel's Healthy Halloween is the book on which I taught myself to read. I turned out just fine.
