My daughter's favorite book

This is my second grade daughter's favorite book. There is a gentleness to the story that conveys in very simple terms the cycle of the seasons and how people work together on a farm. I highly recommend this for both girls and boys.

Beautiful drawings, facts incorrect

I love the art and I love the feeling of the landscapes Arthur Geisert presents here. My parents grew up in parts of Nebraska on farms on land that looked a lot like what you see in this book. I checked some of the details with my father, who was born in 1930 and grew up on a farm near Kearney, NE. Here's what he (and some other men with farming experience) said: 1- Pigs don't eat hay. They eat grain and slops, and can clean up after cattle if you feed the cattle whole corn silage. 2- A haystack built like this wouldn't shed rain properly, and thus would spoil. Most haystacks would be pretty nearly round, about 20' diameter. 3- It's just bad management to let the cattle eat holes into the haystack. If you let them do that the top parts could collapse on them and injure or kill them. Also- a good farm manager rations out the food so the cattle don't eat too much at first and have nothing left at the end of the winter. Again, I love the art, but I think that things presented as facts in children's books should be true.
