I haven't read an awful lot of the classics of this genre, but I can't imagine a more satisfying, interesting, and er, captivating read than this book. I first "came across it" (haha, ohh boy) as almost a laughingstock-throwaway paperback kept as part of a "something to read" library while at my job. But those who are so inclined will recognize that this is a serious work, and a labor of love, so to speak. The psychological depths of it, the risks, will really resonate. It had the effect on me of building an intense but comfortable level of energy... Of course it's so well written that you read until you're fit for nothing else but sleep -- and that straightaway. Enjoy.
