This is another example of Harley Hahn's brilliant wit and insight regarding a very complex matter -- the Internet. My son, Noa, really benefitted from reading up before I bought him his first computer. Last time we read a book this good was David Brin's, "The Power of the Sorcerer." Just like Brin, the writing style and mastery of English grammar leave the reader satisfied and informed. Looking forward to the next Internet guide from Hahn!

If you're new to the Internet and to the email thing, the whole shebang can be extremely confusing. You soon discover that online help is almost no help at all. And nobody wants to sit down with a 1,000-page tome that explains all the jargon in the world except how to get started. The pocket-sized Harley Hahn's Readme First Guide To The Internet is an ingenious solution between the problem of getting too much information and not enough. Don't be fooled by the small size of the book. Between these covers you get everything you need to begin using -- with confidence -- the two most important aspects of the Internet: email and the Web. The book contains a glossary preceded by seven chapters about the Internet in general, how the Net works, understanding Internet addresses, email, the Web, safety on the Net, and the URLs of ten useful websites. Each chapter, each concept, each how-to-do-it segment is written with wonderful clarity. One of Hahn's many gifts as a writer, in addition to his clarity and humor, is his ESP -- a kind of sixth sense about what's essential, and what people need to and want to know. He knows that for a beginner the trickiest thing around is setting up the email program -- and he explains this step-by-step for both Microsoft's Outlook Express and Netscape's Messenger. Technology can be fear-inspiring, and Hahn is aware that the public in general has concerns about various dangers related to the Net. Will our children be harmed? Will your credit card information be safe? Will your computer be plagued by notorious viruses? ... The book calms your fears about these myths, and gives sensible advice about how to protect yourself, your family, and your computer. When you've mastered the basics in this book, you'll want to take a look at the other members of Harley's Internet trilogy: Harley Hahn Teaches The Internet (2nd edition), and Harley Hahn's Internet And Web Yellow Pages. Those books are for a bit later. For right now for beginners on their own, this Readme First Guide takes the struggle out of the learning process. Hahn makes it simple and fun to begin exploring the magic of the Internet and Web. Michale Pastore, Reviewer
