"A preschooler on his birthday finds he is still too short to reach many things....The storytelling in words and poster-color pictures is wholly in tune."--Horn Book.
Sam is four, so he expects to be bigger. However, like many children, he still has to go through his day frustrated that he can't reach and he needs help. Bummer. (Luckily - and this isn't much of a spoiler, you see it on the cover! - his granddad appears with a little chair for him, and Sam's ingenuity saves the day!) Pretty realistic, and a short enough story that early readers can follow with no problem.
Finally Sam

When my own children were little, in the eighties, they enjoyed reading the story of Sam's birthday and his surprise that he did not grow up overnight. As I purchased this book for my grandson Sam's 4th birthday, a tear caught in my throat: small boys DO grow up overnight! Thanks, Pat Hutchins, for your delightful tale.
